Casa Batlló is considered to be the modern highlight of Barcelona. It is situated approximately 500 meters in the north of Plaça Catalunya.
The building was completely reconstructed by Gaudí during the years of 1905 and 1907. The principal of this project was Joseph Batlló I. The construction is a couple of meters higher than the surrounding buildings and therefore forms a contrast.
The facade of the Casa Batlló gives account of the patron saint of the city, the holy Georg.
The appearance resembles the scaly skin of a dragon due to the blue-green ceramics. The roof allegorizes the back of the dragon and the pillars stand for the skull and bones of its erstwhile victims.
So it is no surprise that the Casa Batlló is called the “house of the bones”.
Since 1962 it is under monumental protection.
