Guide Barcelona: District of Ciutat Vella in Barcelona

Introduction Going out

District Ciutat Vella >> see the map with apartments

The Ciutat Vella district is Barcelona’s historical centre and contains a lot of very famous touristic sites as “La Rambla”, “el Mercat de la Boquería”, “el Parc de la Ciutadella”, y el “Port Olímpic”. This territory is divided in 4 large quarters: la Barceloneta, el Casc Antic, el Gòtic and El Raval.

La Rambla, one of the arteries of the city centre that leads to the Mediterranean Sea is one of the best places to take the pulse of the city. Its different ways take the visitor from Santa Anna Roman church to the bird market and stands of flowers, walking trough the beautiful renaissance and baroque architectural Works.

El Palau Moja, la iglesia de Betlem or el Hospital de la Santa Creu will be our guides. Other samples of cultural and everyday life in this area are el Palau de la Virreina (current exhibition centre), el Mercat de la Boquería or el Gran Teatre Liceu. Houses with porticos will lead you to the Parc de la Ciutadella, la Villa Olímpica and to el Port Olímpic. Beaches, wharves and monuments (L´Aquàrium, Imax 3D, el mirador de Colón...) made the Port of Barcelona a cosmopolitan and very attractive place.

BARCELONETA

Barceloneta’s origins go back to the time when was built the pier of the port (1474), fact that generated a slow sedimentation of grounds and sand coming from el Besòs and from the Adjacent littoral, that formed a string of ground in the surroundings of Maians island. During the century XX, the industrial Barceloneta also became the resort of the city, especially thanks to a privileged location. During the summer, the beach was full of Barcelonese people who came to bathe or to enjoy good fishes. This last transformation led to the tertiarization of the quarter’s activity, becoming a place where you can enjoy one of the widest leisure and hotel offers, that we invite you to discover.

EL CASC ANTIC

El Casc Anitc is characterized by the high density of buildings and population, problem that the Administration tries to control through domestic reform plans, looking for a balance between the old urban dispositions, the rehabilitation and the resident population. The quarter of Ribera has become one of Barcelona most important leisure area, mainly concentrating food activities able to support Barcelona citizen’s pressure.

BARRÍ GÓTIC

The century XIX will be the period of huge transformations in the Gòtic structure. The transformation of parochial cemeteries into public squares, the emptying of big buildings with change of use, the demolition of walls and other urban actions, made that the Gòtic started to be seen as prestigious collective patrimony and as value of use thanks to its central location and history, which had to be preserved. The patrimonial value which represents the quarter, the variety and differences with the quarters surrounding and consequently, the complexity of urban processes that are being developed, led the quarter to specialize in the sector of services, becoming the most important centre of commerce in Barcelona and Catalonia.

EL RAVAL

Before the century XIV, the quarter of Raval was only an opened field with cultivated grounds that supplied food to the city of Barcelona. If we go back to the Roman Barcelona, we can find local ways that shaped its later formation. The Population concentration in the Raval, a web of narrow and tortuous streets, the proximity of the port and the number of bars and rooms of spectacles, configured the Raval south area. During the 80’s of the century XX, the Administration stimulated a decided policy of houses reforms and rehabilitation, of equipment creation and of spaces opening for community. The best example is la Rambla del Raval, inaugurated on September, 2000.
