Guide Barcelona: District of Horta-Guinardo in Barcelona

Introduction Going out

District Horta-Guinardo >> see the map with apartments

On this page we present you the four districts, which make up the eastern part of Barcelona:: Horta- Guinardo, Nou Barri, Sant- Marti and Sant- Andreu.

Horta- Guinardo

I n the year 965 Horta was mentioned for the first time by the church of Sant Miquel due to a donation of fertile soil of the valley of Horta. Since then the name appears on numerous documents.

The desiccated river bed was often identified as the property line between the families of the militaristic nobility and the church, which used to own distinguished estates in this region. During the Spanish Revolution in the 18th century it mainly had to struggle with plundering, before it was completly destroyed and burned down in the year 1835.

Guinardo is situated in the former community of Sant Martí de Provençals, which borders on Horta and Grácia. It leads along the western mountain sides of the Muntanya Pelada. Until the last decades of the past centuries it was mainly known for its agriculture, mining, pastures, and farms. The region was named ofter the farm of Guinardó.

Nou Barris

The district of Nou Barris consists of 14 parts: Can Peguera, Canyelles, Ciutat Meridiana, Guineueta, Porta, Prosperitat, Roquetes, Torre Baró, Torre Llobeta, Trinitat Nova, Turo de la Peira, Vallbona, Verdum y Vilapicina. Due to the diverse origin and development of those 14 parts, one of the most individual and youngest district of the city was formed. Situated in areas of the Barcelona hinterland, they experienced an accelerated growth during the 20th century and adapted to the cityskape of Barcelona as they left behind their agricultural character.

Sant Andreu

The arrangement of the district of Sant Andreu derives from the year 1984, when Barcelona enforced the territorial classification into 10 districts.

Sant Martí

The district of Sant Martí is situated in the eastern part of the city. This district has a coast line of 2675 m and thereby possesses a majority of Barcelona’s beaches.

Its name derived from the ancient community of Barcelona: Sant Martí de Provençals, which was an independent small town in the years 1714 to 1897. The today’s arrangement of the district also stems from the year 1984.

The district divides into 4 major parts.
Clot-Camp de l’Arpa and Verneda, which are situated above the Gran Via. As well as Poblenou and Besòs, which are located between the Gran Via and the sea. Those four areas consist of a multitude of diverse quarters, which all have an individual history and original attributes that lead to the agility and diversity of the city districts.
