Antoni Gaudí i Cornet

Antoni Gaudí was born on the 25th of June in 1852. He was born in Reus, which is a town located close to Tarragona.
Gaudí, the son of a coppersmith, came down with rheumatism very early and was thus never able to play and romp with other children. That's why Gaudí took long nature walks as a child. The time he spent surrounded by nature sharpened his excellent power of observation very early.
At the age of 17 he began his studies for architecture at the “Escola d'Arquitectura” in Barcelona.
The probably most important and biggest mission of Gaudí was the creation of the "Sagrada Familia", which is the cathedral of the holy family. In the winter of 1883 he took over the project to build the church from the famous architect Francisco de Paula de Villar.
On the 7th of June in 1926 the architect was hit by a tram during one of his long walks and was found severely injured. Anonymously he was brought into a hospital for poor people where he died three days later. Antoni Gaudí was buried in the Sagrada Familia, where he found his permanent resting place.
Gaudí´s influence on Barcelona
Gaudí transformed Barcelona with his examples of architecture, which are built in a modern style of art and are still an important trademark of the Catalan architecture today.
The Catalans that had been oppressed for a long period of time during the 19th century tried to stand out from Madrid with their own style of art.
One of the most outstanding representatives of the modernism was undoubtably Antoni Gaudí.
During his lifetime, a big part of the population regarded him as a queer fellow. His art split the opinion of the population.
By means of his idiosyncratic style: the round and organic shaping, the rolling lines and the anomalous, nature-orientated forms; he left a lasting impression on the metropolis.
